An artificial grass weed membrane is one of the most straightforward but most valuable things you can add to an artificial grass installation. Laid directly on the sub-base before the grass goes down, a heavy-duty weed membrane acts as a permeable barrier between the soil and the surface above, blocking light, preventing weeds from pushing through, and letting rainwater drain freely at the same time.

Our artificial grass membrane range is available in three roll sizes: 1m x 14m, 2m x 25m, and 2m x 50m, making it easy to cover most garden areas efficiently, with multiple rolls overlapped by at least 100mm at joins for complete coverage. More Info on Weed Membranes

One of the great appeals of artificial grass is a low-maintenance garden, and a good weed membrane is a key part of making that a reality. Laid beneath your artificial grass, a weed control membrane acts as a barrier between the soil and the surface above, blocking out light and preventing weeds and other unwanted plant growth from pushing through. It's the kind of thing you'll be very glad you included a few years down the line.

Our artificial grass membrane is a heavy-duty weed membrane designed specifically for use beneath artificial turf. Despite its robust construction, it remains fully permeable, so rainwater can drain freely through the surface and into the ground below, with no pooling or waterlogging. It comes in a 1m x 14m roll, 2m x 25m, or 2m x 50m, making it easy to cut to size and cover most standard garden areas, with multiple rolls butted together for larger spaces. Installing a weed membrane for artificial grass is straightforward: it's simply laid over the prepared sub-base before the grass goes down, with any joins overlapped by at least 100mm to avoid gaps. Fixing pins can then be used to hold it in place prior to the grass being laid on top. FAQs - Weed Membranes

We'd strongly recommend it. While artificial grass itself blocks a lot of light, determined weeds can still find their way through the backing or around the edges over time, especially in gardens with an existing weed problem. A weed control membrane laid beneath the grass provides a reliable, long-term barrier that prevents this, saving you considerable effort further down the line.

Our artificial grass membrane is a woven polypropylene fabric. This gives it the strength and durability needed to function as a heavy duty weed membrane, while the woven structure keeps it permeable so water can pass through freely. It's UV-stabilised for outdoor use and designed to last for many years beneath your lawn.

No, our weed membrane for artificial grass is fully permeable, meaning water drains straight through it just as it would without a membrane in place. It won't cause puddles or waterlogging, and works seamlessly alongside the existing drainage properties of the artificial grass itself. This is one of the key reasons a purpose-made artificial grass membrane is preferable to using a general landscaping fabric.

Installation is quite simple. Once your sub-base is prepared and levelled, roll the weed membrane out over the entire area, cutting it to fit with scissors or a Stanley knife. Where two pieces meet, overlap them by at least 100mm to avoid any gaps that weeds could exploit. Use fixing pins to hold the membrane in place, then lay your artificial grass on top as normal.

We offer our artificial grass membrane in three roll sizes: 1m x 14m (14m²), 2m x 20m (40m²), and 2m x 25m (50m²), so whether you're covering a small garden or a much larger area, there's an option to suit. To work out how much you need, simply calculate the total area of your lawn in square metres, then choose the roll size or combination of rolls that covers it most efficiently. Always allow a little extra to account for the recommended 100mm overlap at joins and any trimming to shape around edges.

A weed membrane isn't necessary on a solid hard surface like concrete or paving, since weeds can't grow up through it in the same way. Instead, weed membranes are mainly recommended for installations on soil, sand, or aggregate sub-bases where weed growth is a genuine concern. On concrete, adhesive is the main installation tool rather than membrane and pins.

Yes, if you're using both a weed membrane and an underlay as part of your installation, the membrane goes down first directly onto the sub-base, followed by the underlay on top, and then the artificial grass on top of that. This layered approach gives you the benefits of weed control, cushioning, and drainage all working together.

A good quality, heavy-duty weed membrane will suppress the vast majority of weed growth very effectively for many years. In rare cases, particularly persistent weeds may eventually find their way around the edges or through tiny gaps at joins, which is why overlapping sections by at least 100mm and keeping edges well-secured with fixing pins is important. Used correctly, a weed control membrane makes a significant and long-lasting difference to your lawn.
